Easy Tips to Teach Your Preschooler Math

Math is an enjoyable and easy subject for your preschoolers to learn; if you know all the right tricks and tips, that is. You don’t have to pull out all the cards – literally, or overwork your kids in your quest for them to be little math geniuses, but you can use some regular objects and toys you probably already have in your house.

  • One-to-one correspondence

This is the understanding that a number can correspond with an object. Children learn how to recite numbers first before they learn how to count objects in correspondence with the numbers. With careful explanation and enough practice, they will soon learn that ‘one’ means one object.

  • Use worksheets

Sometimes, the easiest way to teach children math is the most popular method – using kindergarten math  worksheets. With worksheets, children can practice solving simple math as their interest in numbers is piqued.

With these tips, you can be sure your child will get over whatever fear they may have regarding math. Don’t forget to include math in your everyday activities, and show your little preschoolers how math can apply in real life situations.

  • Recognizing numbers

Teach them what the actual numbers look like in their written form. This can be done with the aid of worksheets, writing boards, and number games. If your children see the numbers often enough, they will soon learn to identify ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’.

  • Shapes

Teaching your preschoolers how to identify shapes will set a solid foundation for their future geometry classes. Make sure you call the different shapes by their actual names; no matter how long or difficult they may be. Use everyday objects as examples; the kitchen tiles are square, the doorknob is round, the cookie cutters are triangle.

  • Addition and subtraction

Preschoolers do not need to memorize math facts and figures. In fact, math is pretty straight forward for them once they understand the idea of adding and subtracting numbers. Use simple word problems to keep their brains sharp and test how well they understand what you teach them. If you do not have time to study math addition and subtraction with your child on your own, try this as the teachers approved learning activities playlist.

Knowing what to teach your preschoolers is one thing, and knowing how to teach them is quite another. Here are some tips to make their learning process easier:

  • Bring me 5

This activity can be easily done anywhere, at any time. Ask your child to bring a specific number of items; “please bring me 5 pencils”, and count the pencils together with your child when they deliver.

  • Measure

Kids love to put things into practice, and measuring volume, length or height is a great way to keep them actively learning. In the kitchen, use measuring cups and spoons to help children visualize what they are working with.

  • Arrange things

Teach your kids how to identify bigger and smaller by arranging objects in the order of their size. This way, when you say something is bigger or smaller, your children will be able to easily visualize what you mean.

  • Play a board game

A lot of popular board games involve counting and numbers. If you are looking for games specifically designed to help children master the art of counting, Tiny Polka Dot is a simple board game designed with children as young as 3 years old in mind.
