A study published on ScienceDirect analyzed data from 1,780 children who had surgery for NEC at 47 specialized children’s hospitals. It revealed a concerning mortality rate of 23.3%. This highlights the critical and dangerous nature of NEC.

How is Enfamil linked to necrotizing enterocolitis?

Enfamil, like other baby formulas, is designed to provide essential nutrients to infants and is formulated to closely resemble breast milk. However, research has shown a concerning link between formula feeding and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). 

Consumer Notice reports that one of the first studies to establish this link was conducted in 1990. It discovered that premature infants who were given formula were up to 10 times more likely to develop NEC than those who were breastfed.

This finding raised significant concerns about the risks associated with formula feeding, particularly for premature infants.

Legal Action

Recently, many parents have taken legal action through the Enfamil lawsuit, claiming the company failed to warn about the risks of its formulas. Plaintiffs argue that the company was aware of the risks but failed to provide sufficient warnings or modify its products to mitigate these dangers.

According to Drugwatch, the most affected families are those whose premature infants developed NEC after consuming Enfamil, whether in the hospital or at home.

In a 2022 lawsuit, Sasha Stewart described how her baby, A.F., was initially fed maternal or donor breast milk in the NICU. Later, he was switched to Enfamil Premature Infant Formula 24 Calories.

Shortly after switching entirely to formula, A.F. developed NEC, which led to severe complications like sepsis and abdominal swelling. He was hospitalized four times and underwent two open-bowel surgeries, spending almost six months away from home. This ordeal caused significant emotional and financial strain for his mother.

This heartbreaking story is just one among the hundreds of lawsuits filed against Enfamil. The number of lawsuits continues to grow, leaving many more families likely suffering in silence.

Gerber and the Heavy Metals Issue

Gerber, a well-known baby food brand, faced legal challenges related to the presence of heavy metals in its products. Reports and studies have found that some Gerber baby foods contain detectable levels of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and cadmium. It alleges that these companies violated consumer protection laws by including toxic levels of heavy metals in their baby foods. 

One of the claims against Gerber suggests that the heavy metals in the food caused brain injuries. This is said to have led to an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis for a child who consumed the products.

Similac Lawsuits: NEC and Cronobacter Sakazakii Contamination Claims

Similac, a baby formula brand manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, is facing lawsuits over allegations that its products are linked to serious health risks. Families have claimed that Similac products increase the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis and Cronobacter sakazakii infections in infants, particularly those with low birth weights.

What is Cronobacter sakazakii?

Cronobacter sakazakii is a type of bacteria that can cause severe infections in infants, particularly those with weakened immune systems or low birth weights. It can lead to conditions such as meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

The lawsuits, consolidated under MDL 3026, argue that Abbott Laboratories failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks associated with its Similac products. Plaintiffs allege that Abbott knew of the potential dangers of NEC and Cronobacter sakazakii but did not take sufficient action to prevent harm. 

The litigation also involves contamination at Abbott’s Sturgis, Michigan facility, leading to a major recall and worsening the nationwide baby formula shortage.
