military mom who's been away from home for nine months has given her son the best high school graduation gift ever: She surprised him by showing up at the graduating ceremony.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Vera Turner, who's been in the U.S. Navy for 16 years, had told her son, Steven Turner Jr., that she wouldn't be able to make it ... only instead, she hatched a plan with the school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to ambush him on stage.

The son's reaction? It'll bring tears to your eyes. Check out their touching reunion below:

Military parents sacrifice so much: It must be so hard to be away from your child for so long. So the fact that she could be there for this big moment is so touching.

It also proves that even if we can't be there for our kids as much as we may want, it's okay -- even if you're not at every school play, field trip, and other function, as long as you make an effort to be there when you can, it will mean the world to your kids.

What moment in your child's life would you be sure not to miss?
