Moms Discover Their Babies Were Mixed Up at Birth During a Crazy, Chance Meeting

Have you ever had the sneaking suspicion that your baby ... isn't really yours? Ordinarily, a feeling like that would be a case for seeing your doctor and asking about postpartum depression, but in the case of 37-year-old Maria Lorena Gerbeno, her odd feeling that something was off with her baby turned out to be the best feeling she could ever have had. It turns out there is something to be said about a mother's intuition -- even if her intuition is telling her that ... the baby isn't hers!

Gerbeno, a mom of three and lawyer in San Juan, Argentina, gave birth to a baby girl on September 30. The baby was healthy, but Gerbeno couldn't shake the feeling that something was strange about her.

For one, Gerbeno had given birth by Caesarean section and was told afterward that her daughter weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces.

But when her baby was handed to her later, she was told the newborn weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and they said something about a breech birth. Gerbeno told a local news station:

I told them that could not be but they said I must have misunderstood. I never got any answers.

A little confusion about weight and type of birth isn't exactly going to make a new mom leave her baby at the hospital though, so Gerbeno packed up her newborn and left. 

Three weeks later, Gerbeno took her daughter to a clinic to get a check-up. There, she ran into another new mom, Veronica Tejada. As new moms will do, they began chatting and comparing notes, and soon realized that their babies each weighed what they had been originally told their babies weighed.

That set off more alarm bells in Gerbeno, who lodged a complaint and demanded a DNA test. Sure enough, it turned out the little girls were each with the wrong mother!

What are the odds the two moms would run into each other like that? What are the odds they would compare weights?

These two could have easily ended up raising babies that didn't belong to them.

Both moms are considering legal action against the hospital, but on the whole, no harm was done, as each mom feels confident that her baby was taken care of. Says Gerbeno:

I spent three weeks with a baby that was not my daughter, but I gave her all my love and knew that the other mom would do the same.

Not the way you want to spend the first weeks of your infant's life with your actual infant, but it could have been a lot worse. Let this be a lesson to all moms, though. If your instincts are telling you something, listen to them. Check it out. Demand answers. And don't give up.
