Thinking About Homeschooling? Then You Need These Beginner Tips
Homeschooling is stressful! Make no doubt about it, when you’re both the parent and your child’s teacher, you’re taking on double the work with zero chance for a break.
You can’t take 6 hours between 9 and 3 to yourself, and all work will be homework - that’s a lot for both you and the kids to deal with!
While there are many benefits to homeschooling, and it could be a very viable option for your kids, the whole family needs to adjust at a steady pace. And for that, you’re going to need some top tips!
Usual School Hours Don’t Have to Apply
It’s OK if you want school to start a little later than is traditional. Your child will probably prefer it too, what with very few kids actively wanting to get sat at their school desk by 8.45 in the morning!
School could start at 9.30, or even 10am.. And if you still want the school day to round off by 3, you’ll still have a good 5 hours to spend on constructive classroom activities.
This leaves a bit more space for you to get on with other things around the house too, whether you need to run an errand or if you work from home, you can easily get an hour to go through client emails.
Use Ready-Made Learning Materials
When they’re ready made for you, you don’t have to put half as much time and effort into coming up with the right work and reference sheets on your own.
That’ll save you a lot of energy in the long run, especially if you plan to homeschool for the best part of your child’s schooling years.
And seeing as there are plenty of helpful resources like online math games, downloadable and printable Phonics Worksheets, and plenty of video tutorials for arts and science projects you can do, you won’t have to go far to find the right items to use.
Listen to What Your Child Wants to Do
It’s hard to encourage learning when the kids are bored, frustrated, or otherwise not engaged with what you’re teaching them. And when this kind of atmosphere draws over the home, these feelings can spread to other areas of life too.
You want your child to enjoy homeschool, and to appreciate their ability to learn and play at the same time. As such, make sure you ask them what they’re interested in doing.
What do they find fun? What do they want to learn about? What’s got them curious? Or if those questions are a little too open ended, present them with some themes to focus on for the school day and let them take their pick.
