Makeup Tips For Hot Weather
Along with making you look “picture perfect,” makeup also has many psychological benefits. Experimenting with makeup can be a means of self-expression, something therapeutic that you can make time to do for yourself, and a method of concealing signs of aging without having in-office cosmetic procedures like BOTOX®. The Bala Cynwyd-based injectors at Dr. Timothy Greco’s cosmetic practice know that makeup can be a major confidence enhancer—but they explain that there’s also no doubt that bad makeup habits can often have a negative impact on skin.
One of the worst potential side effects of makeup is blocking pores, which can lead to some brutal acne breakouts if we aren’t careful. Another bad habit is not washing makeup off before you sleep at night, which can make wrinkles look more pronounced. Considering dripping sweat, sticky skin, dehydration, and painful acne breakouts, keeping our skin clean during the summer is hard enough even without lipstick, mascara, and foundation.
If you love makeup but don’t want it to melt off in the heat, here are five tips. Instead of being stressed about smudging and running makeup or other skin-related woes, enjoy summer activities while following this advice to keep your skin in great shape during the time of year when UV radiation is most intense.
1. Wear Lighter Makeup
When it comes to hot temperatures and makeup, less is always more. Summer is the perfect time to let your pores breathe. When the hot weather arrives and you’re already dealing with oily summer skin, there’s no point in wearing a ton of makeup that can lead to caking and creasing. Instead of mascara, try out a lash lift and/or tint.
2. Choose the Right Kind of Moisturizer
Even though your skin can get extra oily, the sun, heat, and air-conditioning often strip away moisture. Use an oil-free face moisturizer each morning to keep your skin hydrated.
3. Use Waterproof Products
Planning on spending time at the pool or lake, or maybe have a beach vacation coming up? While it’s tempting to skip makeup completely, there are times when you won’t want to be completely bare faced. You need to look for cosmetics that won’t melt off at the first sign of sweat or contact with water. These products won’t budge with moisture, so they’ll also come in handy if you’re engaging in an intense gym workout, get caught in a rainstorm, or want to get through another allergy season. Try liquid lipsticks, waterproof mascaras, and waterproof liquid eyeliners to get you through the day.
4. Experiment With Colors
When summer comes, many of us ditch the all-black winter gear in favour of bolder and brighter colors. You can do the same with your makeup color palette. Instead of neutrals, brighten up your look with bolder shades of lipstick and blush that make your skin look radiant.
5. Think About Sun Protection
While there are some skin care products you can get away with skipping, sunscreen is essential. Even though you should ideally be wearing face sunscreen under other cosmetic products every day, and re-applying it every few hours, many people forget to apply sunscreen when they’re wearing makeup. After all, ruining your makeup by smearing on a greasy layer of sunscreen doesn’t seem like a fun idea. But trying to apply it on top of sunburned skin won’t be easy either.
You can solve this problem by looking for makeup products with built-in SPF of at least 30, such as tinted moisturizers and broad-spectrum sunscreen powders instead of wearing foundation. The great thing about powder is that it can be added on top of and blended into your existing makeup. Don’t forget to also protect the thin, delicate skin on your lips by frequently applying lip gloss containing SPF if you plan to be spending time in the sun. The eyelids are another area that we often neglect, but luckily eyeshadows formulated with SPF are available.
