Wendy Davis airs ‘cool mom’ status in Vogue profile

While Texas Sen. Wendy Davis (D) considers a gubernatorial run to paint the Lone Star State purple, she’s working on perfecting her “cool mom” status.

Davis is the subject of an extensive profile in Vogue’s September issue. In the piece, Davis recalls her memories of her absent father, her first jobs and her stark first wedding. While the woman that appears in the folds of the year’s most highly anticipated fashion issue is poised, polished and politically viable, Davis alludes to her pre-political self, a woman with untamable frizzy hair, with humor.

“I remember we’d go into restaurants and everyone wanted to talk politics, and I thought, God, this is soooo boring,” Davis said about her life before public office when she was married to Jeff Davis, the youngest ever Fort Worth city council member.

While the profile chronicles her already famous story of winning a state senate seat by way of single motherhood and a Harvard law degree, the image of Davis as a once-reluctant political bystander reflects her current reluctance to jump into Texas’ hotly contested gubernatorial race. She is described by her opponents as “too smart” to run for a higher office though her supporters think she’d be crazy to pass up the opportunity.

“I’m a very competitive person,” she said. “You won’t change things unless you are prepared to fight, even if you don’t win. But I do hate losing.”

Losing is real possibility in a state as red as Texas, though current polls place her merely eight points behind Attorney General Greg Abbot, the likely Republican gubernatorial candidate. Davis is caught between not wanting to disappoint her supporters, who have donated heavily with the anticipation of a run, and not wanting to disappoint herself with defeat.

Despite political pressures, Vogue primarily depicts Davis as the self-made mother of her daughters Amber, 31, and Dru, 24, who said they would “support her in whatever she does.”

“I’m happy in Lululemon, with a glass of red wine, watching HGTV,” she said of her routine when her daughters are not in town.

The profile also details Davis’ best friend’s connection to the New England Patriots, Davis’ boyfriend’s reaction to the HBO show ‘GIRLS,’ and her favorite clothing brands.

Vogue’s September issue hits newsstands Aug. 20.
