Five Security Tips Every Family Needs

Home security is critically important to protect the safety of your family. One of the first things most families look up when considering buying or building a new home is the safety of the neighbourhood.

Homeowners need to carefully consider smart home security systems for their homes and the safety of their families.

Burglars typically choose an unoccupied home with the easiest access, the highest amount of cover, and with the best escape routes. Families can use the following actions to improve their home security and protect their family’s safety the smart way.

Identify Resources and Create a Plan

It is vitally important for families with children, especially if the little ones will be coming home with no supervision after school, to have identified safe resources as soon as they move in. Kids should have access to a mobile phone; a list of emergency contacts; and a trusted friend, family member or neighbour, and know what to do if they come across an emergency alone.

Establish rules for opening doors for strangers, having friends over, locking doors and windows, and operating the alarm system, if you have one. Establish an emergency exit plan if there is a fire or break-in while the family or child is home. In some households, children are home schooling; they may fall victim to experiencing a break-in.

Consider a Home Security System

Home security systems may not completely prevent a burglar from gaining entry, but the monitored alarm may scare them off before they can do damage. Security systems provide you with an alert that your home has been breached and will trigger a call to the police, minimizing the amount of damage from a burglary.

Many systems today can provide you with alerts when your kids get home from school or when a door has is left unlocked so you can keep tabs on your family’s safety from afar.

When choosing a home security system, consider your current lifestyle and the needs of your family when choosing any home security system.

Secure Windows and Doors

One of the simplest ways to improve your home security is to lock your windows and doors! According to recent surveys, most burglars enter a home through the front door, and nearly five percent of homeowners admitted to leaving their doors and windows unlocked when they were not at home.

Nowadays installing smart sensors for your doors and windows is one of the best options. When you are not at home, burglars will trigger the sensors, and send a signal on your mobile phone and possibly your security company to respond immediately.

Use Smart Timers and Lights

Burglars always aim for the house that looks vacant and empty instead of one that looks live. Use timers and lights to the best of your advantage, especially when you are out of town. Timers are used to turn the lights, the TV or the radio on and off to give the impression that you are home even when they are not.

Exterior lighting can be used in the front and back of the home to expose dark areas where burglars could be hiding. Motion sensors prevent lights being on all night and provide an element of surprise if a burglar is moving around on your property.

Get the Kids a Guard Dog

How long have the kids been nagging you for a dog? It is time to give in and get them one! Dogs pose as an incredibly effective burglar deterrent. Burglars want to enter and run as quickly as possible without drawing any attention; a dog is not going to let that happen. They will let you know when something strange is going on outside or if a stranger is at the door.
