Breaking the Barriers Of A Disability
Years ago, people viewed disability as something that impedes normal life. As time progresses, people are more aware of things and are changing perspectives. A disability may have come since birth or as a result of a traumatic accident.
In whichever case, there are things that you must remember to keep your boat going.
You are entitled to the same opportunities
Do not view your disability as something that hinders your growth. Grab opportunities available for you, whether it be in the field of education or careers. Online education is an excellent way to further your knowledge. Learning takes place in the comfort of your own home.
As starters, you are given a series of online instructional materials. Online mentoring and assessment are also done for you to measure your progress. This strategy gives you an equal opportunity for education. The inconvenience of traveling to and fro a learning institution is eliminated.
More establishments are also accepting people with disabilities to work for them. The leverage of having acquired formal education helped. Employers now look at the actual skill set of the person and not on his physical limitations.
Also, owners discovered that people with disabilities are dedicated and friendly employees.
You are your own competition
This applies to everybody. With or without disability, this principle is the healthiest route to success. Comparing yourself to others puts unnecessary pressure on you. Focus on what you can do and continue to strive to be better every day. Be your own barometer of failure and success.
Also, do not beat yourself up for some skills that you are still mastering. Be clear with your goals and match them with your capabilities.
You have to choose your tribe
Appreciate the support of people who care for you- your family and friends. Seeking connections is good, but do not overdo it. Stick with people who respect you and care for you. Stay away from people who make fun of you. They are not beneficial to you.
Also, some people may mean well when they give you looks of pity. Then there are those who expect less from you because of your condition. These kinds of people are not helpful to you, as well. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you to be the best.
You have the power to empower
Connect with people who want to know you because you inspire them. Use your disability as something that empowers others. Tell your story to inspire, but not to brag or to ask for pity. Many people need a reason to keep going because they have their own hardships, too. Be an instrument of hope for others.
You must celebrate each day
Rejoice in your small victories. Do not be consumed about what you want to accomplish for tomorrow or the next day. Take one day at a time. Even if you fail, remember not to give up. Keep on moving forward. Forget what was, work on what is, and look forward to what will be.
Your disability could only affect you according to the way you perceive it. Your path may be harder than what others have. But with perseverance and patience, you can achieve your goals. The insights mentioned above are not absolutes. But, they can help you deal with your condition.
