The Zoom Effect: How Skin Treatments Can Help You Look Your Best in Video Calls

Since we’ve all started using video calls more often to communicate in business settings and socialize, more people are noticing small physical flaws they may not have picked up on before. As we stare back at close-up images of ourselves on-screen, any wrinkles or sagging areas are particularly noticeable. It’s not just about vanity; how you look will influence whether you make a positive first impression, and we all want to look great and professional in conferences. If you’re tired of looking tired all the time in Zoom meetings, maybe your face and neck need a pick-me-up. The South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center team offers Ultherapy® treatments in New Jersey to help tighten up the face and neck. Additionally, the team provides advice on a range of skincare options, as well as other cosmetic services like fillers, neuromodulators, and skin resurfacing treatments.

In some ways, the lockdowns happening across the country make it easier to “hide” the fact that we have had treatments done, since we spend our time in public wearing masks—and most of us are staying at home more anyway. With this in mind, many patients are taking advantage of the opportunity to have the beauty treatment of their choice. Here is a quick rundown on a few of the more popular options:

Ultherapy®

With plenty of us spending our days hunched over or craning or necks to look at our laptop screens, many of us are not only experiencing neck pain, but also feeling self-conscious about wrinkles and sagging in the neck area both of which are visible on-screen. This problem, known as “tech neck,” happens when we stare down at our devices all the time and creases form on our necks. Our neck area has thin skin, and we likely don’t often give as much attention to it as we do to the skin on our face.

Ultherapy® is a noninvasive procedure that involves using ultrasound energy on specific areas of the skin, delivered to the deep tissues to stimulate collagen creation, thereby firming and lifting the skin without the need for a facelift. Skin quality continues to improve during the following months.

Fillers

Have you noticed tiny lines and deeply etched-in wrinkles or folds on areas like the cheeks and around the mouth? Aging causes the skin to become thinner and weaker, as it loses the moisture and collagen it needs to support it. Sun exposure is one of the primary causes of damage, and the pull of gravity can also cause the skin to become more wrinkled over time.

Dermatologists can use fillers—soft gels injected below the skin’s surface—to replace volume that has been lost. Several of the most popular fillers, such as the Juvederm® family, contain hyaluronic acid, which is a chemical often used in moisturizers and that can hold onto large amounts of water to hydrate the skin. In addition to reducing the depth of smoker’s lines and deeper nasolabial folds, fillers can also be used to give you rounder or more structured cheeks and poutier lips.

BOTOX®

Those lines commonly seen around the upper third of the face—like crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes, vertical forehead lines, and furrows between the brows—are best treated with injectable neurotoxins like BOTOX®. These are the types of wrinkles caused by excessive muscle activity when you constantly make facial expressions and the muscles stretch out the skin. BOTOX® injections relax these muscles for several months at a time, so that you can enjoy a more rested, youthful, and smooth appearance.

Chemical Peels

Sometimes your skin can look washed out, blotchy, or dull in the poor lighting on camera, and you just need to revitalize it. With a chemical peel, a mild caustic solution is applied to the superficial layer of skin. This causes the damaged, outer layer to be sloughed away and triggers the skin to create new skin cells and collagen to replace it. The result is brighter skin with a more even tone and texture.
