Snow Days Challenging in Single Parent Homes

FREDERICK, Md. -- For kids a snow day is something to look forward to, but for many parents the unexpected off day means choosing between taking time off from work or shelling out extra cash for child care.

"Anytime you have inclement weather its always going to be a challenge for families," said Chris Colville, CEO of YMCA of Frederick County.

The challenges that come with snow days are especially difficult for single parent homes.

"I think the biggest difference for me, because I am a single parent, is that you can help one another when you have a dual household. One might stay home one snow day and the other works. You don't have that luxury as a single parent," said Eric Ireland, COO of YMCA of Frederick County.

Severe weather highlights the importance of child care services for local families.

"Being the parent of a needy kid is interesting. Especially when you get snow days. I drop her off at 6:30 in the morning and I have to be at work in D.C. by 8:00 a.m.," said Leslie Mills, a working single dad.

According to the Department of Labor, only 37%of full time workers had paid personal leave in 2012.

At the Frederick county YMCA, there has been an increase in families depending on the service for help with child care. It's been a a saving grace for those who cant take time off.
